The 53rd edition of the Chess festival Groningen started with some 360 participants. Some 80 of them participate in the Open Tournament. A bunch of GM's, some IM's and players who want to excel or just beat one of those titled guys or girls. At the start of the tournament they all should be dreaming of a perfect score.

How many of the GM's can still dream? Nearly all of them. Dutch GM Jan Werle scored a regular win in a Queens Gambit. He won a pawn and just outclassed his opponent. IM Jorden van Foreest (but GM at the next FIDE-congress) saw his oppponent blocking the retreat of his queen gone astray. His bishops reaved havock in the white position resulting in the following position.

After 33.Kg1 Bf3 34.Rf4x white got mated by 34...Rh1.

Indian GM Syam outplayed Dutch Jaap Amesz, a former Dutch tv-celebrity, also known as Terror Jaap. The Israeli Avital Burochovsky had an easy afternoon against Michael Ernst who sacrificed two rooks for virtually nothing, so he resigned. German Marcus Dehn didnt start his game against Lobzhanidze to end up in a position for chess novices, where it says: White to play and win.

After the horrendous 17…Rae7 and the obvious 18.Nd5x black prodcued 18…Qb6. A bit of German humor, or an act of complete self-hatred?

Going back to the perfect score; only thirty players can still go for the perfect score
